“I Don’t Give a Shit!”: Yasmina Reza’s God of Carnage

Western societies uphold themselves as pillars of civility and culture. But what happens when petty squabbles and perceived standards of discourse cause reasonable people to lose their proverbial sh*t? This paper analyzes the deterioration of Western luxury through objects, evoking the aesthetics of abstract expressionism and Western interpretation of “primitive” African art, in Mark Thompson’s scenic design for Yasmina Reza’s play God of Carnage.
